We drove past patch fires on the way in....small, managed burns that are everywhere during the dry in the top end.
Ubirr is a place where the rocky escarpment country juts out to meet the flood-plain. It is astunningly beautiful place. To visit Ubirr, see the exceptional ancient aboriginal rock art and then to climb the rock for an elevated 360 view of your surrounds is to experience the essence of Kakadu - vast, diverse, ancient, spiritual and imposing. Today, Hugh, Rich and I had it to ourselves for a half hour or so. The weather was warm, the lightest of breezes. The floodplain vivid green, the sky blue, punctuated by smoky plumes of the dry season burn off. We wandered, observed, chatted.
